Teri Emanuel, RPC|WE Children's Director at the Missouri City campus, contacted Cultivating Families to collaborate on a summer service project for their 4th- and 5th-grade youth. An on- site project that allowed the youth to gain a broader understanding of the people they would help was essential to Teri.
Cultivating Families recommended that they undertake their Personal Hygiene Kit Project and add Ft. Bend Rainbow Room (FBRR) to the collaboration.
Tonya Lewis, Executive Director at FBRR offered their warehouse for “Packing day,” and the students began collecting toiletry donations right away.
Why Personal Hygiene Items?
Families in foster care may have very little time between a phone call and welcoming a child to their home. First Night Hygiene Kits are one small way to make the transition easier. Having these essentials available, families can focus on their child rather than purchasing essential supplies.
“The collaboration between River Point Church, Cultivating Families, and FBRR is what community is all about. It takes these relationships to serve those who need help.” Tonya Lewis, Executive Director of Fort Bend Rainbow Room

While the students worked, they learned these facts about Foster Care.

Students were also surprised to learn that the United States does not have orphanages and that children in foster care could be living in their neighborhood, attending their school, or being part of their community.
The timing of the project was perfect. In just a few hours, the students had completed their service project, learned about foster care, and the personal hygiene kits were added to FBRR’s larger back-to-school care bags for families in foster care.
